Jesus’ final words to His followers were to “make disciples . . . baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). Baptism by immersion was a common custom during Jesus’ day signifying that someone was in need of God’s forgiveness. For us, it is a picture of the way Jesus’ death on the cross cleans us of sin. Sin is forgiven and the life we live is new—clean and fresh. (Colossians 2:12) (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Much like a wedding ceremony shows that you are committed to your loved one, baptism signifies that you are serious about following Jesus Christ. The person being baptized is publically declaring his or her trust in the work of Christ to have a relationship with God. It is a declaration that you are a Christ follower.
